Day 128 in 2021

Dance recital day! We missed this spring event entirely last year thanks to the pandemic, and this year's performance was distinctly different; instead of nealry three hours including all age and ability levels, the studio was divided into four different sections to allow for proper distancing back stage and in the audience. The performance we attended included two other groups (one very young and one between) and all five of Calvin's competition group dances (ballet, contemporary, hip hop, jazz, and tap). It was  wonderful, and fun, and so very close to normal. We even went out for an outdoor, distanced ice cream with some of his friends from the team. But there were no photographers this year, in either rehearsal or performance, so we came home and did a costumed photo shoot of our own that left a lot to be desired. Better than nothing is the mantra of this slow roll out of a pandemic.

Day 125 in 2021

Though some our school is back to in-person learning, about a third of Calvin's band is still what they are calling "home based", or learning entirely from home. That made tonight's spring band concert interesting, with about 2/3 of the band on stage, socially distanced and wearing masks with instrument slits in them (what???), and about 1/3 of the students Zooming in from home. They had to be fully dressed and playing along, and, though muted, they were projected on a screne to the side of the stage so the limited audience could see them in all their Brady Bunch glory. It was Gimli's first, and probably last, band concert.

So close, and the news is pretty good these days, but we're still at least a month and a half from Calvin being fully protected, so for now we continue with caution...
